Norfolk July 4th 2026 — Waterside Review

Image
The fireworks display at Waterside on July 4th, 2026, was excellent — well-timed, powerful, and visually impressive. Unfortunately, the overall event experience was marred by serious public-safety and crowd-control issues after the show. What worked: Fireworks: The main attraction delivered. The choreography, intensity, and finale were all top-notch and made for a memorable patriotic display. Atmosphere before fireworks: The pre-show atmosphere was lively and festive, with food vendors and families enjoying the riverfront. What failed: Security and crowd management: After the fireworks, there appeared to be minimal security presence. Staffing levels and visible crowd-control measures were insufficient for the size of the crowd. Large groups of intoxicated teenagers: There were dozens — I would estimate over a hundred — of visibly drunk teenagers who were intentionally aggressive and intimidating. Their behavior included loud harassment, pushing, and attempts to force passage through cr...

Blue Moon Tap House at Waterside

Image
Blue Moon Tap House at Waterside was a major disappointment on the 4th of July. The restaurant was extremely hot inside (in the evening), and we were told the fryer was not working, severely limiting our menu options. We waited a long time for service that was very slow despite our waitress being really good. Many tables were reserved, leaving the place mostly empty. I ordered anyway, but then french fries arrived that had clearly been fried. The fries were disgusting with a strong burnt oil taste and smell. It seemed they told us the fryer was down simply to avoid changing the oil. My chicken BLT wrap was decent. Total letdown bringing family from out of town for fireworks at Waterside. Not sure if they want to stay in business with these issues.

Historic Hicks Field - Edenton Streamers

Image
The Edenton Steamers game against the River City Skippers was a fantastic evening at Historic Hicks Field. The ballpark is really cool, a preserved 1939 WPA-era wooden grandstand that’s the oldest of its kind in North Carolina and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It offers an intimate, old-fashioned baseball experience with the community right on top of the action. A day before the 250th anniversary of our country, the patriotism was incredible. Everyone was decked out in red, white, and blue, creating an inspiring atmosphere of American pride and community spirit. The game itself was exciting and fun, perfectly capturing small-town summer baseball magic. Edenton Steamers games at this historic venue are a must for baseball fans and anyone appreciating history and patriotism. Highly recommended! A wonderful way to enjoy America’s pastime in a truly special setting.

The Bier Garden | Portsmouth

Image
The Bier Garden is a true Portsmouth gem and one of my all-time favorites. I’ve been coming here for over 20 years and it never disappoints. The authentic Bavarian atmosphere is a perfect 5! Warm, welcoming, and full of Old World charm with its extensive beer selection (23 taps and over 400 beers) and cozy German decor. The gift shop is really cool too, with unique souvenirs and German items. The food is excellent. I had the Jägerschnitzel with double spätzle and a fresh German beer on draft...so good, hearty, and flavorful. Service was solid. Whether for a casual lunch, dinner, or special occasion, The Bier Garden consistently delivers great food, beer, and experience. Highly recommended for anyone craving authentic German cuisine in a fantastic setting. https://www.biergarden.com/
